Important historically: Azorian fully rigged killing lance Marked U.A.B on both sides of lance head. U A B stands for Uniao das Armaco Baleeiras which translates to Union of Whaling Weapons. U A B was one of the first whaling companies started in the village of Capelas on Sao Miguel in 1936. It is extremely unusual to find an original whalecraft item which is marked bearing it's hallmark from an Azorian island. Excellent condition and correct in every detail. Azorean's were off shore whalers through the mid 20th century. They also hired on as crew members during the 19th/20th centuries on American whaling vessels. When they crewed on American vessels they often brought their irons with them. This could explain how this iron ended up in New England. Azorean irons are an import part of American whaling history and are over looked by collectors. 20th century. Used good condition. Approx. lance head l 48" total l 116" item wh2103
